Police Chief Foster Visits George and Willy - #7

Mrs. Mapes welcomes Grass Valley Police Chief
John Foster to George and Willy's World for a half hour
of stories and information of interest to children - and -
apparently to George and Willy also. Our two canine friends
also visit with Guest Helen Kranz who is a family member
of George - who it seems - is really a girl dog and is 6 years old.
There are other surprises as Police Chief Foster talks about
what it's like to be a police chief.

   
 

Schools - Nevada County Reading #2

Six 8th grade students from Magnolia Intermediate School
participate in the Nevada County Reads program in which stidents
read and discuss the award winner book, Holes. by Louis Sachar.
This book is the 2007 selection in the program. It is being read
and discussed through February, 2007 by students countywide.
This is the second NCTV program in this series. Today's panalists
from Magnolia School are: Denise Julian, Rachel Fabris,
Rose Paquin, Connery Nickerson, David Giroux and Jonathan Otwell.

   

Interviews - Carole Carson #2

Carole Carson, local fitness guru, after conducting
a very successful weight loss campaign in Nevada County,
goes national with her program. Carole has published a book
challenging other communities to Get Fit, Not Fat.

   
 

George and Willy's World #6

In Episode 6 of George and Willy's World, we listen
to children's books read in English and Spanish.
Corlene Mapes, local 3rd grade teacher, hosts this
children's program and introduces a new craft in each show,
directed to 4 to 8 year olds and their families. Our guest is
Mrs. Nohemi Mead, Promotora with Sierra Nevada Children's
Services.

   

NCTV Interviews - Ken Ramirez

Ken Ramirez, local Nevada Union High School science
teacher, is interviewed about his writing career.
Ken has just finished his third children's book, last part
of a trilogy based on the lives of gnomes. His books are
available locally and his third volume has just been released.

Nevada County Reading Project #1

Six students from Bitney Springs Charter High
School discuss the award winning book, Holes by
Louis Sachar. This book will be read by Nevada County
residents and students during the month of February.
Each year, the County Superintendent of Schools and
the Nevada County Library select a book that would
appeal to many in order to encourage reading and discussion.
Student panelists are: Marc Wolff, Miles Ross, Helena Mackinlay, Shyanne Dustrud, Mathilda Moore and Morgan Buckner

Lew Sitzer interviews Pilar Fox, local resident
who now administers a children's shelter in Mexico.
Also discussed were the citizens of Oaxaco, Mexico,
who are striking to remove the governor of the state.

   
  NCTV Interviews - Dr. Scott Kellerman

A Nevada County physician for over twenty years,
Dr. Kellerman is - as Lew puts it - a "man on a mission".
Dr. Kellerman has just returned from Uganda where
he and his wife have been engaged in humanitarian work
with the Sub-Saharan Pygmy population for 6 years.
Many people from Nevada County have travelled to
Dr. Kellerman's location to assist in the work which
is described in this program. Dr. Kellerman shows many
color slides illustrating the challenges and progress
of this interesting and worthwhile work.
   
 

George and Willy's World #5

Corlene Mapes hosts another of the popular programs
called George and Willy's World. Mrs. Mapes brings us
another children's show complete with our canine friends,
George and Willy. Today's reader is Dr. Rob Avery who
is a local veterinarian. Many Nevada County pet owners
have met today's reader when they brought their pets to
the hospital which is called For the Love of Pets on
Idaho-Maryland Road in Grass Valley.

   
 

The Wild and Scenic Film Festival

Lew Sitzer hosts NCTV's interview series and brings
us a program about the annual Wild and Scenic
Environmental Film Festival held in Nevada City,
January 12 to 14. Guests on the show are the film
festival coordinator, Janet Cohen and Nevada County
film animator, Ariana Cardenas

Serious challenges face Nevada County in the field
of health care. Doctors are leaving the area creating
a patient overload for those remaining and leaving many
people without adequate primary care.

with Maori Healers: Hirini Reedy and
Ruth Tai with Facilitator Loraine Webb

Hirini Reedy and Ruth Tai are Maori Healers from India
and, in this program, facilitated by Loraine Webb,
Hirini and and Ruth demonstrate the sorts of teaching
and spiritial rituals that have special meaning in this
ancient art from India. Nature and the cosmos are
origins of Maori Healing. Lew Sitzer is host.

   
 

George & Willy's World #4

Mrs. Corlene Mapes introduces today's Reader
and Guest, Hannah Harrison from the PAL program.
Hannah is a senior at Nevada Union High School and
is a cross-country runner and skiier. Members of the
PAL program are teamed with students from Nevada
County elementary schools. Play sessions are one hour
each week during school hours. Hannah tells us about
the PAL program and reads us some fascinating stories.

 
 

George & Willy's World #3

Mrs. Corlene Mapes - our host - is a third grade teacher
at Hennesey School. George and Willy help Mrs. Mapes by
visiting classrooms, including her own, where children visit
with them and read some stories to these wonderful pets.
Today's special guest is very interesting. She is a musician
who also owns a pet center and animal hospital called
"For Love of Pets". Her name is Inger Avery and she is going
to entertain us with music and will read us some special
stories.
 

   
 

NCTV Interviews - Maria Brower

In this interview, Maria Brower, local Nevada County
author and historian discusses her work with host and
fellow historian Lew Sitzer. Ms. Brower is the author
of two books - one of which focuses on life and stories
from early Nevada City. A more recent book chronicles
other Gold Rush towns of Nevada County as well.
Ms. Brower shows many photos from her recent book.

   
 

 NCTV Interviews - Tim Palmer

Lew Sitzer chats with Tim Palmer, nationally recognized
photographer, author, and publisher of 17 books centered
on the environment. The realtionships of people to the
earth are of great interest to Palmer. Presently he is
following his special focus on Rivers as a critical wildlife
habitat and as a central part of our landscape and
of our lives. He has recently published a book called Rivers
in America filled with his favorite photos of some of which
he shows in this program.

   
 

 Reality Check - Whatcha Gonna Drive

What is the future of personal transportation. In other
words, what are you going to drive when the fuel crisis
becomes so obvious we just have to change our ways.
Michael Thompson joins host Lou Meyer in this edition of
Reality Check - to help supply some answers. They discuss
a recent event called Whatcha Gonna Drive? a "Post Petroleum
Car Show" held Sunday, November 19, at the Center for the
Arts in Grass Valley. Shown were some thirty different
kinds of progressive devices that make personal transportation
possible when fuel - as we now know it - is no longer available.

Lew Sitzer chats with Julie Baker of Julie Baker Fine Arts -
the well known gallery celebrating its 5th Anniversary Show -
"Homegrown" - Nevember 10 - December 31. Julie Baker talks
about the gallery's origins and artists they have shown over
the years. In addition, she shows and describes art now in the
Julie Baker collection. Details of the upcoming Anniversary
Show are also featured.

Mrs. Corlene Mapes hosts the second program in the children's series,
George & Willy's World. Today's special guest is Jim Marquis,
the Grass Valley Fire Chief. George and Willy are reader dogs and
often go to classes to hear children read. Fire chief Marquis tells us
about a fireman's clothing and tools which are needed when fighting a fire.
We hear about things that can keep us safe including the important
